Cant it be that Clarke's second 'death' was the last straw? When with Josephine he acted on his first instinct and got into her face, but while paralyzed, he broke down, because it sinked in that Clarke is gone (again)? Maybe he reached his limit, *****'s been happening to him constantly.
I agree on the other parts, that the show kind of struggles with dealing with the whole ensemble and finding the balance to integrate everyone into the story in a meaningful way and not just in a convenient way plotwise.
