The interesting thing about it is that I heard Matt was against it because of Ross/Joey's friendship and if true, ironically it's the same way it was written on screen. Joey didn't want to do that to Ross since he saw it like betrayal.
So on screen they wrote it perfectly. Joey fell in love with the one person who should've been off limits to him but he couldn't control who he fell in love with. And in the end, he always choose Rachel's happiness and put his own desires to the side.
