I agree, I like that the writers held off a few years with Joey/Rachel. They let them be roommates for a year or two, and then have Rachel get pregnant and Joey's protective side comes out. He does all the right things for the wrong reasons, he's so confused, and in the end, he realizes he does have feelings for Rachel beyond sex.
So, yeah, I am happy the writers did what they did. It's enjoyable seeing their scenes in season 5/6, though.
