No, nothing like that. He did it willingly. Not 100% sure why. I hear different things. His interests were elsewhere now, it was getting harder to write lyrics, etc. It was odd because he was at the top of his game. "River of Dreams", his last album, was a major success. He still had it but he just stopped.
