It's a family drama about the Pearson family. It's been nominated for numerous Emmy, SAG, and Golden Globe awards, and is a huge hit with critics and audiences. It's NBC's most successful new show, and this is its second season.

It's about the Pearson family, and the show is told during multiple timelines. Jack and Rebecca Pearson(Milo Ventimiglia and Mandy Moore), who meet, fall in love, and marry in the 1970's. In 1980 Rebecca gives birth to triplets, but one of them is stillborn. Their children, Kevin and Kate, survive, but the third triplet, Kyle, doesn't make it. Jack decides to adopt an abandoned black child who was dropped off at the hospital by a fireman, who found the child dropped off by someone at his fire station. Jack and Rebecca name the adopted child Randall, and Kevin, Kate, and Randall are known as the Big Three.

In the 80's, Kevin, Kate, and Randall are played by young actors portraying them as children, and in the 90's the Big Three are played by teenage actors. The adult actors playing the Big Three in the present day are Justin Hartley(Kevin), Chrissy Metz(Kate), and Sterling K. Brown(Randall).

The show keeps shifting back and forth in time, telling Jack and Rebecca's story in the 70's and 80's, and also telling the story of the Big Three, with most of the story in the present day, and shifting back to their younger days in the 80's and 90's at regular intervals. All of them deal with their own personal struggles and relationships. Randall is married with two children, and has become the model father and husband that Jack set the standard for. But Randall also struggles with always feeling torn and out of place, being the adopted child and a black man raised by a white family. Kate is single and dealing with her weight and an eating disorder she's had since childhood. She's an aspiring singer, but suffering from body image issues and self-conscious about her appearance when compared to her mother, who was beautiful and a talented singer. Kevin suffered a knee injury in high school that ended his dream of being a professional football player and instead pursued a career in acting. But he's haunted by the same addiction problems that his father, Jack, had, as well as the pain of feeling like he was the lesser-loved child, as Rebecca showed more attention to Randall and Jack gave more attention to Kate, both assuming that Kevin was the strong one and that they wouldn't have to worry about him and not realizing that he was feeling neglected.
