my guess is that the actor was probably too busy with other work or for some reason didn't want to come back...because they still occasionally mentioned him in later seasons and even after Max's death. I really can't imagine why Russ wouldn't come to Brennan's wedding or their father's funeral, unless they couldn't bring the actor back for some reason.
