completely agree. I will always find it really out of character and selfish of Ephram to leave when he did. He was not just leaving Amy either, he was leaving Bright, his best friend, too. You are right, it definitely should have put things in perspective for Ephram, especially since he knew what losing your mom feels like... he had to have known what Amy and Bright were struggling with during their mother's cancer. It was weird how he just left. He left them during such a horrible time. He also left his little sister too and she had no idea when he was returning.
That makes three of us who thought Ephram was being totally insensitive to the needs of his friends and even his own sister who was devastated when she knew Ephram was leaving
