Comments: More Zen as the comics get closer to season 5. Also, Fez’s affection for Kelso has grown, too. In the comics, however, that affection purely platonic. In Fez’s country, boys and men are raised to express their feelings openly, and friendships among men can be physically intimate (e.g., hand-holding, hugging, walking arm-in-arm). Nothing sexual is implied by this physical intimacy, but Fez’s American friends often don’t understand that.
I based this characterization of male friendship in Fez’s homeland, in large part, on “Class Picture” (4x20); specifically, the scene where Fez declares Hyde his best friend and says to him, “Let’s hold hands.”
