If they were going to bring someone back after they had gone missing, not dead, just missing after 7 years they should have made it Merle or something. At least he has the connection to Daryl so there's more excitement there. Now that I think about it, they already did this when Merle was part of the Governor's group.

I was definitely the most invested in season 4 and the beginning of 5 but season 1 was more a show I could really enjoy without needing to have a favourite character. Some parts I don't remember but I thought most of the stuff at the quarry was really good.
