Speaking of plot holes...why did the watcher's council pay the watchers a salary but not their slayers? Gilles gets paid for his work but Buffy doesn't? She's only the one doing all the heavy lifting and, ya know, saving the world.
Wouldn't she be a more effective slayer if she could slay full-time instead of worry about bills?
