There was canon evidence to back up Nathan having feelings/a soft spot for Peyton. Moreso than her having a soft spot for him.
But I could see them exploring their dynamic after he changed toward the end of s1. They would've been a different couple at that point. But I wouldn't have wanted that to happen if he had dated/married Haley, that would be weird considering PH's friendship.
