I guessed that they did it because they needed to reiterate how Stefan caused so much damage to everyone
like when he is arguing with Damon on who should sacrifice their life he brings up Enzo again. So they needed an upsetting death like Enzo's so that Stefan would die the noble hero blah blah blah! lol.
