I suspect McAvoy has some Irish ancestry. McAvoy can be an Irish name, there's lots of people of Irish descent in Scotland (Sean Connery, Brian Cox, Billy Connolly, Gerard Butler, Robert Carlyle, etc) and McAvoy was born Catholic, which tends to go with Irish ancestry in Scotland (the primary religion in Scotland is Presbyterianism).
