I got a lot of Star Wars vibe from the scene with Hodge.
Jace is battling himself, who he really is, so think he went with Valentine because first and foremost saving his friends from him, and himself. Since he doesn't know how dark he can go
(what a contrast from the first episode! Dom was not kidding there.) he probably want to be somehwere else in order to find himself.
But being with a someone manipulative is probably not the best move though...
