Because he feels guilty, guilty for everything he's done to her, for not being able to protect her from remembering the night of the fire, for all that he has done being for nothing and therewith having her caused so much pain before. We all know that he loves her, and knowing that all the pain you did to her in the end was for nothing... I'm sure that will kind of break him.
