He has recently, but he did go through a period where he seemed to be chasing that gold statue. Now though, he seems just to want to tell compelling stories, and make good movies that appeal to the broadest possible audience (though he's struggled to capture that audience of late, despite making some quality pictures). He does engage with less commercial, character driven, actor centric fare on occasion, even if it's been a while now since he's done so.

Bryan Singer's Valkyrie, and Robert Redford's Lions for Lambs were the last of that ilk.
