For the banner I think that Klaus, Rebekah, and Elijah should be in it. They're the main characters...if needed I guess you could also put Hayley and Marcel in, but given how they're more supporting cast I think it really should just be the Original family in it.

As for color scheme... definitely light colors. I find it so much easier on the eyes. I would say when I think of this show I think of red, but I don't know how you could do that successfully with light shades.
Maybe a nice grey/blue combo would suit the board because the show does have a "darkness" to it. Plus the S2 photoshoot seemed to have that same color feel. Like This:
