Kai tries to imprison Bonnie in 1994, but Elena jumps in front of her and gets imprisoned instead. Damon watches this from afar and assumes Elena died. He kills Kai and the prison worlds collapse. When Damon finds out that he killed Elena, he tries to kill himself, but Bonnie stops him and casts a spell on everyone (including herself) that erases Elena from their memories, as if she never existed. Little do they know, Elena didn't die. She's just stuck in some sort of limbo.

Stefan or Damon makes the decision to let her go in order to save the majority, and she gets sucked into some sort of portal which takes her back in time. Over the years she begins to detest whichever one did it, and goes slightly mad, and adopts the name Katerina. Katerina's life goes on from there as what we know from the show's history so...
Elena turns out to be her own doppleganger, with full knowledge of her ealier existance as Elena.

"Guys, stop joking around..."
"They're not kidding," a voice tells her. Turning, she gasps. It's Klaus. "Yes, they have forgotten you, little Elena. Now you are all mine. Or rather, your blood is all mine. I rather need an army of hybrids now."
Whisked away to some locked away dungeon deep underground where no one will ever look for her and everyone--all her friends except Jeremy--having forgotten her entirely.
To live the remainder of her days producing Hybrid Go Juice

Season 7 is really all an elaborate dream in which Elena is no longer in Mystic Falls and for the series finale Damon will wake up with Elena in the shower (ala Bobby Ewing in Dallas)

She's in a coma all this time, because of the car accident. Everything that happenned was all in her mind. But it wasn't all her imagination, Damon entered her mind and gave her these stories, so she wouldn't be alone. She wakes up, he compells her to forget and leave. They meet in the series finale, just like they met the first time, in the middle of a road...

How about Damon and Elena BOTH die and go off into the light forever together. Damon's long-lost, secret twin will get rescued from whatever prison world he's been stuck in and he can step in to help fill the void.

However, during her "fight to death", Alexandra Chando (Who is definitely Nina's look-a-like) will appear as Elena's real twin (NOT doppelganger) and try to save her; however, fails to do so and continues on to be the next star in Elena's place
