If they weren't raised together for most of their lives, there wouldn't be many pictures of them together.
They could easily be doing the same thing as the books in terms of the girls becoming friends, they have hinted at it, imo.
Alison coming back as Alison could just be the show doing things a little differently. If she'd come back the same way, it would have been obvious.
We had a moment like that with Jason, where she remembered a family trip differently to how he did.
