I don't think it's hopeful. It's logical. He isn't a real person, so his behavior can be anticipated in ways real people's behaviors cannot.
I am a person walking in the woods hunting geocaches. It symbolizes only that my daughter loves hunting them. If we were characters it would be symbolic or be a plot point.
