Well, that was the writers' choice, it's not Elena's fault
A lot of things were "shown" off-screen, even things about DE or SE last years, it doesn't mean they matter less, it means they cannot all be shown in 40 minutes
For now it seems she only got this one episode to mourn Damon too anyway, and she lost the battle so much she'll have to be compelled to move on, we won't see her mourn him anymore
Again, in my opinion it's a different type of mourn, both of them are important, to mourn the bestfriend you have known all you life and to mourn the man you want to spend etenrity with, Elena love them both, mourned them both, it was just dealt in different ways
