I think there's more to it than we know. JP and CD both said the love stories (DE and SC) would be a push and pull. The fans will get angry at times but then breathe a sigh of relief and be happy. I think this will be one of those things.
Besides we already know DE will reunite in 607/608 so whatever happens in 6x03 isn't long term. We also know that Damon will tell Elena to move on in the premiere and I think we'll see her trying to do that. "Trying" being the operative word. It doesn't mean she'll succeed.
