Since they did the back and forth with DE in the last 7 episodes last season, I don't think it's necessary to continue to give DE obstacles right after this one. I mean, they're already facing a death obstacle. Once they reunite, I think they need to just let DE be together and face the next obstacle together and not apart. Contrary to popular belief, it IS possible for a popular couple on a TV show to remain interesting without having to deal with something major every episode.
And Julie Plec said a good part of the first half of season would be DE longing to be together which implies a good portion of the episodes but not all of first half of season. Ian filmed with Paul and Candice last week which means Damon is back. And this week they're filming 6x08 which is when I think the rain kiss will happen. I don't think that's too soon at all. TVD's story arcs only last about 7 episodes anyway.
