I love the idea for this thread. OTH used to be one of my favorite tv shows. I still remember all the OC vs OTH fights and I always thought OTH was better but now watching both shows years later The OC was the best despite some pretty huge flaws.
I hated how the show's focus changed in OTH. The shipping was always going to be part of the show but the show used to be about family too and it had some pretty interesting conflics during the first season. Also some storylines were incredible rushed (like Lucas and Nathan becoming real brothers) and others moved at snail pace.
The worst episode is the school shooting episode. I have never seen a serious topic like that treated in such a unrealistic and contrived way. Also I hated how they made Dan kill Keith and removed any type of decent storyline that wasn't about ships (like Dan's redemption and if he could have a good relationship with his kids) from the show. And then tried to bring that storyline back in the later seasons but it didn't feel right after what they had done in S3.
The later seasons felt like a different show and it was obvious they had run out of ideas and didn't know what to do. I loved Julian when he first appeared. He was different from all the other characters and Austin Nichols was really charismatic. Then they changed his personality to fit the OTH mold and his character and relationship with Brooke became boring.
Naley became boring after they got married. Not because they were married or the ship itself but because the writers didn't know how to write for them and created pointless drama all the time and it was really annoying. The audience knew they were never going to break up for real so what was the point?
Another thing is that this show takes the cake for craziest shippers. I have been part of some crazy fandoms but I have seen nothing like this show. I think the drama BTS fueled the craziness too. I still remember all the theories and people blaming Hilarie Burton for the Chad/Sophia divorce when in real life she got along with both of them and had the same boyfriend during the entire time she was in the show
Also the people who were convinced for years and years James and Bethany were secretly dating.

IMy biggest problem with OTH was they kept reusing the stalker storyline. Like, seriously???? I can just imagine their writer's room. "Hmmm...we're all out of storylines. Who hasn't had a stalker yet?"
