Thank-you HarshBench and puffball7! I think what was confusing me was the use of "Lord" as in Lord Grantham and Lord Gillingham. That made me think they were at the same rank. I see that Robert is an Earl and Tony is only a Viscount, that's the difference. It's clearer now but I can see why they have to keep track of everyone in a book!
