Unlike the show, I can't write Hyde's proto-alcoholism as if it's a punchline. He's so much better than his parents (Edna and Bud), kind-hearted, protective of the vulnerable, and self-sacrificing. When alcohol comes into the picture for him, it brings his painful childhood along with it.
