It sounds to me like his issues were not the job, but a serious case of depression (also addiction later on)
I mean, I'm not sure what he was expecting to be honest - he wasn't cast as the lead actor, short and simple - sure the business sucks, but all the other actors on the show probably had the same issue and he'd have had even more reason to worry if he was unemployed at the time
