Yeah, I was a little disappointed with their last encounter in the series too, but I really loved how it went in the movie. And yeah, more movies would have been great!
When I was watching for the first time, I zoned in on Simon and Kaylee as the 'unresolved tension' couple in the pilot, largely because of that first dinner scene, and for some reason I picked up on none of Mal and Inara in the first three eps. Then I hit Shindig and basically it was OH MY GOSH MAL AND INARA LIKE THIS IS A THING HOLY CRAP WHY DID I NOT SEE THIS BEFORE? and then ten seconds later I was like HELP ME I'VE FALLEN AND I CAN'T GET UP.
