"The course of true love never did run smooth." Because when love’s course does run smooth, it never gets a chance to prove it’s true. Nobody in his right mind wants such a chance. We want to be spared the test, yet to have hope that we could pass it if we had to.
Reminds me of the old "proof of election" problem in traditional Christianity. People want to have hope that they've got what it takes to get into heaven ... without having to prove it. Without giving all their goods to the poor, or becoming dinner for lions, etc.
And if love is our salvation, then those two conundrums are really the same, aren't they?
