When you're as messed up as they both were in the beginning of S5, using each other for sex takes on a very visceral, self-destructive tone (which is totally fine by me - I loved the storyline) and it was mixed in with other ways they were attempting to self-medicate (drugs, etc). Well, I guess, then, it's just representative of their inner destruction, because we're allowed to see how much they're trying to remove themselves from being able to feel love for another person.

But, like you guys said, it doesn't work in the end. She grows attached and Dylan, coming to understand the motivation behind her own ways, does start to give a damn. It's in both their nature to give a damn.
