After the peak of their confrontation in "Who's Zoomin' Who?", I'd say Valerie was one of the few people he did allow himself to be kind to in S5. They were both onto each other in so many ways. That's what makes that confrontation great.

I think in that time, Dylan was sort of a mess. I hate to say it but it seems like in the beginning of S5, both Dylan and Val just used each other for sex; not so much in negative way (except that it hurt Steve). The reason why I don't think it's negative is because neither of the minded. They knew they weren't in love with each other....but the good news is that later in S5, I think Val grew fond of Dylan and wouldn't mind being with him.
