I love them both and I regret nothing. I'm not even big on TVD, but the characters that I care about make me stick to this show. And the most important thing for me is Damon/Stefan bond. It's made more then clear that they would never willingly give up on each other. I think they are each other's humanity. Yes, I am a DE fan, but I think when it comes to humanity, Stefan was the one who brought it out of Damon from the beginning of the show. Damon was always willing to risk to save his brother. And so Stefan does for him. I love them so much.
