Hmm, right now I can't recall the comment - but I trust your memory.
Maybe the ending is a middle ground, between death-tragic and happy-reunion sappy. She could end up not pregnant, but having gathered enough strenght to break free from her empty marriage. Still a sort of bleak ending (because she is alone), but with a possible spark of hope.
That said, you could be right with your speculation - "tragic" is a pretty strong description, although Liz exagerates with words, from time to time.
