Natasha Richardson played the mother in the movie. A few years ago (maybe a little bit more I can't remember exactly when) she had an accident while skiing and had head trauma resulting in a coma that they said she basically wasn't going to wake up.
Maybe the Olsen Twins didn't want the role.
