chad and sophia are so sweet together
in my spring/autumn issue of teen now it has an interview with chad. i couldn't scan it but i typed it up.

How are the wedding plans coming along?
We’re still trying to figure out a date- it’s not proving that easy. We’ve got to wait until we’ve finished filming the second season of One Tree Hill before we can do anything, so I can’t release too many details.

How did you propose?
I was in Australia last summer working on the movie House of Wax and Sophia came out to see me. I laid out 500 candles on a tennis court and got my assistant to light them as the sun went down. The candles spelt out a message and I took Sophia up to the balcony of our 18th floor hotel penthouse so that she could read what they said.

Did you get down on one knee?
Yes. I believe being proposed to is a really, really important moment for a woman, so I wanted to do what I could to make it special.

Had you told your plans to anyone?
I called my father and said: “Dad, I’m going to pop the question.” He said: “Oh God.” Sophia’s the woman for me and my dad completely respects my choices. He just wants to make sure I’m happy. I also spoke to Sophia’s parents and asked their permission before proposing.

You both seem happy.
She’s my girl. She keeps me centered. We were friends for months before we got together- she’s amazing and perfect for me.

Can you tell us something funny about the pair of you?
Dude, she complements me very well. She’s a neat freak and I’m dirty. I can’t help it. I wrestle with the dogs everyday. We watch [American] football on the weekends and keep our lives to ourselves.

Do you think fewer girls will tune in to One Tree Hill now that you’re engaged?
If our show’s not successful because I’m engaged, then we’ve got bigger problems.

Do you enjoy going back home?
Yeah, it’s great getting back to Buffalo. We were there for a week earlier in the year. It’s nice to be in a small town and not be chased by photographers.

Do your old friends treat you differently?
They’d never do that. I don’t get to see enough of my boys, so it’s brilliant to get back, take them out and have a good time. On New Year’s Eve we went downtown to a place called Warehouse. We got a little room in the back. It was good.

What else do you miss about the place?
I miss the Bills [the local American football team]. Sophia puts the jersey on and watches the games with me.

You star alongside Paris Hilton in House of Wax. What’s she really like?
She’s cool. I think the stereotypes suck because she’s a really sweet person. I mean, she was one of the nicest people on the set. She never had a negative thing to say and she tried really hard. She impressed me.

Is it true that you were nearly burnt while filming House of Wax?
A piece of set caught light and I was 1½ft away from it. I started to get water blisters on my hand and I jumped and said: “What?” I got out of there in the middle of a take, I turned around and whoosh, everything was gone.

What’s your character like in House of Wax?
The character has an edge, a rebellious nature to him- he’s someone who really doesn’t care about his look or anything else. It’s simplistic and I thought that was the way to go for the film.

He’s very different to OTH’s Lucas, then?
Yeah, but I also love playing Lucas. He’s such a good character.

You turned the role of Ryan Atwood in The OC to play Lucas. Any regrets?
I’m not going to start any bad blood. Let’s just say I’m happy to be here. I was given a choice and I made it. I have no regrets.
