I think they had a strong friendship in S1, Caroline said Bronnie was her best friend twice, and they talked all the time when Bonnie was away. They could have done sooo much with their friendship, with the vampire thing, but they kinda just dropped it, so disappointing. I totally got why Bonnie reacted the way she did, I wish they had done a better job of showing her point of view on things, but alas.
