Golden Globes: How to Get Lea Michele's Loose Chignon

At last night's Golden Globes, Lea Michele's ruffled, pale-pink Oscar de la Renta gown served as inspiration for her rumpled updo. "With the detailing at the top of her dress, we couldn't leave her hair hanging down," said hairstylist Mark Townsend. "We wanted her to have a clean neckline, but without taking all of her hair up into a tight updo. The only thing she asked was that we not pull back all her bangs, so instead of leaving them long and blunt, I swiped them to the side and blended them in with her shorter front layers."

When Michele arrived around 11:15 A.M. with clean, wet hair, Townsend applied a conditioning serum from Dove (available in late 2011) and rough-dried her hair as he tousled it with his fingers. When it was halfway dry, he ran Dove Curl & Sculpt Defining Mousse through it, then dried it completely with a large round brush. To create the wavy texture, he wrapped one-inch sections around a three-quarter-inch curling iron, curling the front pieces away from her face, and the hair at the back of her head in alternating directions. After raking a styling cream through the spirals to give them shine and definition, he gathered all of her hair into a messy chignon at the nape of the neck—minus the shorter pieces at the front left side, which he left hanging loose—and pulled the top layers forward to give the front some weight. Townsend finished the look with a heavy misting of Dove Unscented Extra Hold Hairspray. "I love when hair looks like it's going to fall any minute, not like it's frozen in time," he said. "I wanted her hair to move when the wind hit it outside, which is why I love this spray."
