I think the key this season has been switching the serious stuff over to Naomi and the comedic stuff over to Annie.
Naomi thrives in the more serious situations (like early S1) because those reveal more of her layers. Annie was intended from the start to be charming, which makes her the more humourous one. Besides that, Shenae seems to be pretty good at the comedy thing.
