It is supposed to be a movie about everyone. If somebody said no they the whole chain doesn't work.
I don't think the problems with her BF could in any way influence the movie, more her issues with Jack.
You were assuming the movie is ought to be centered around Effy and Cook. If they are not willing to work together then it would have to be rewritten.
