Yeah, I think he would make a better mentor for Riley than a boyfriend that he would see as a romantic equal. There was something about Sam that seemed big brother-ish in a way...or at least older. Was Sam said to be a student? Or maybe he was some college kid teaching the life guarding class as a part time job?
