Because it was just like the scene in the movie King Kong, where the gorilla climbed the Empire State Building. I don't think the monkey thing with Ted's building happened, because we all know future Ted embellishes.
I think Marshall really did get mugged by a mugger with a gun. The only times he changed his story to the monkey was when Lily was in earshot. I think he was afraid she'd get the gun because he was afraid of an accident or just having it around. He should have just told her that though. She would respect it because she loves him. I think the whole lying thing was unnecessary
