Shannon- i think what you said is spot on. Whether people tolerate, like or love P/A together, i think mostly their relationship is viewed respectfully. They definitely had something special going on, and to this day i still believe that it was one of the most touching and beautiful tv relationships that i have ever viewed on a tv show- and after such a strong set up and development, did not deserve the unjust demise that it was dealt with.
