I think a lot of people do realize how messed up Sawyer became but then I guess they either want him to stay this way (so he doesn't go back to Kate), or just blindly worship his character and see everything he does as right, lol. I think a lot of her popularity this season comes from Sawyer's popularity, they just want him not to suffer, so Juliet being desparate and a cling on made his fans happy (not me of course). On the other hand, some people will always want Sawyer far from Kate, which explains why Juliet was hated in season 3 and all of a sudden loved this season when she was a far cry from who she used to be as a character.
