Holy jump the shark episode. Good grief.
Here is my current conspiracy speculation. This is ALL Ed's fault.
My reasons for thinking this:
he and jessica are together
he has said he'll do anything when he is in love
someone posted on here a few thread ago an interview in which Ed actually said he was glad the writers were letting him have some feedback on his character and the story
So I think all of this is partly to protect Ed's real-life girlfriend's job. If true, THIS is why actors should act and let writers write. And why Josh shouldn't try to do 12 different projects at the same time. They always go to crap when he turns his back.
