I think it's because those who are Ray/Neela fans will hate whoever Neela is dating if it isn't Ray.
The same thing happened back when there were Carby/Luby wars. Carby fans hated Luka and Luby fans hated Carter. This happens with every fandom of all TV shows I believe.
