“Tru Calling” (Fox Home Entertainment, $52). Shows like “Seinfeld” and “Everybody Loves Raymond” can take their sweet time coming out on shiny discs. But in the case of “Carnivale” and “Tru Calling,” timing is everything. Both of these first-season collections are being issued right now, not because Fox and HBO think they'll make ideal stocking stuffers (they're free to think that, but remember what we said about hope), but rather to spark interest in each show's upcoming second seasons on TV.

“Tru Calling,” a sexy version of “Early Edition” starring Eliza Dushku, got renewed despite being pounded in the ratings. That can probably be explained by some interesting statistics I saw last summer. According to TiVo, “Tru Calling” was one of the 10 most-recorded shows last season. Airing opposite “CSI” and “The Apprentice,” the show may have had a following among time-shifters. Now we'll see if it can build momentum from a holiday DVD push.

The new season of “Carnivale” begins in January. “Tru Calling” was to have returned in January, but its time slot has been given to a new show, “Point Pleasant.”
