The Last Herald Mage is so good! It's set in Lackey's world of Valdemar, in which Heralds get Chosen by Companions (sort of special horses) and they protect the kingdom. The protagonist of this particular trilogy is Vanyel, a gay teenager with a lot of magical gifts.
