Metallica's big problem is that they started making bad music, people stopped buying, they're so full of themselves they they couldn't think that it was them, so they blamed downloaders, and went after them with extreme prejudice.
As for Free downloading, look at Nine Inch Nails and Radio Head. They're in full support. They know where their bread is buttered.
