The read-only mode happens sometimes when LJ is slow. It usually happens with free LJs first, so that they can keep the servers running smoothly for the paid LJs. If it's getting too much though, it also happens with paid users. It's nothing to be worried about. Just try it again and it should work. Same goes for when you post comments.
