Degrassi Students

Hazel Aden – Grade 10
Positive and ever-cheery Hazel is a Spirit Squad member and Paige’s right arm. Revealing to her friends that she’s Muslim was less traumatic than Hazel thought it would be and has given her renewed confidence. Still, it’s not easy to live as a Muslim in a secular society and Hazel continues to face the challenge of being true to her spiritual self.

Jimmy Brooks - Grade 10
On the outside, Jimmy has a charmed life – an easygoing personality, rich parents, athletic talent, and good looks. But life as a latchkey kid leaves him struggling to make it on his own emotionally, which sometimes means lapses in judgment.

Sean Cameron – Grade 9
Still waters run deep, and Sean’s troubled life at school and home still nag him. He’s adopted a tough Eminem look and hides under a hoodie. Finding he’s adept in auto-shop has given him some focus and Sean’s relationship with Emma has always been a badly needed stabilizer in his life. But lately it’s felt stifling, leaving him susceptible to the overtures of a new, rougher group of guys.

Marco Del Rossi – Grade 10
Marco is kind, funny and a total neatnik – but his greatest talent is his ability to get along with everyone…. so far. Last year, Marco suffered through confusion about his sexuality. And this year, he’s got to figure out how to handle this new discovery about himself. He doesn’t think his friends will be supportive if he admits the truth. The big surprise on Marco’s horizon is falling in love for the first time – confusing for anyone but maybe more so for a guy who just came out.

Toby Isaacs – Grade 9
The nerd label continues to dog Toby as he embarks on a rough first year of high school. He is still together with his girlfriend, Kendra, but his best friend JT seems to be headed down a different road with the popular kids. Toby takes solace in statistics and the virtual world.

Nadia Jamir – Grade 8
Sunny, bright and full of ambition, Nadia is a popular girl in her class at Degrassi. Having been in a wheelchair her entire life, Nadia is very aware of her physical restrictions, but never lets them be an impediment or an excuse. And when she does encounter a physical obstruction, her best friend Kendra Mason is there to help.

Ashley Kerwin – Grade 10
While her look keeps evolving, Ashley remains an intelligent, goal-oriented, ambitious and sensitive girl on the inside. After a rough time last year, Ash is coming into Grade 10 more secure with who she is and ready to play a big role in the new environmental club with Emma. She’s also a budding songwriter and poet, something she and her new boyfriend Craig have in common -- although, she sometimes has difficulty understanding his emotional distance.

Craig Manning – Grade 10
Artistic and charming, Craig hides a lot of personal pain since the death of his abusive dad. Craig now lives with his guardian, Joey Jeremiah, and half-sister Angela – who means everything to him. But emotional attachment is increasingly difficult for the lonely Craig, who keeps even his girlfriend Ashley at arms’ length. Instead, Craig devotes himself to his new garage rock band. Will Ash and the band be enough to keep him on the straight and narrow?

Gavin "Spinner" Mason – Grade 10
Spinner might think he’s a tough guy, but more often he’s just a big goof. Spinner is struggling with schoolwork and the humiliation of repeating Grade 9 English this year. Luckily, being with Paige makes him happy – they’re a tumultuous pair but they truly care for each other. He’s soon in for a big eye opener when he finds out one of his best friend isn’t what he appears to be.

Kendra Mason – Grade 8
Years of having to hold her own against her brother Spinner have made Kendra an independent, strong-willed, no-nonsense girl. She excels at sports – and so far, she’s unashamed of being a tomboy. She was adopted as an infant and this leaves something to explore this year – what does Kendra’s Chinese heritage mean to her?

Terri MacGregor - Grade 10
Terri’s a very pretty girl, but her insecurities about her weight and looks are really holding her back from being all she would like to be. Terri lives alone with her father, a widower, and her feelings of responsibility toward him have helped to reinforce her caring personality. A new love interest has Terri on cloud nine this season but will her dream of true romance crumble at the hands of an abusive boyfriend?

Dylan Michalchuk – Grade 12
Paige’s older brother Dylan eats, sleeps and breathes hockey – he’s a Junior A star on all the up-and-coming lists. And he shares his sister’s sharp and sometimes cutting sense of humour. Dylan also happens to be gay – and very out. It hasn’t been an easy journey for him, but it was a necessary one. Right now, he’s comfortable with his choice -- so comfortable that he might be looking for a boyfriend.

Paige Michalchuk – Grade 10
Grade Nine was a tough year for Paige, who was the victim of a date rape. All around, Grade 10 promises to be a better year. She’s got Spinner, her pivotal role on the Spirit Squad and she’ll be the first of her friends to get a driver’s license. Paige may have it all together, and now she’s going to make sure everyone else does, too.

Ellie Nash – Grade 10
Degrassi’s no-nonsense alterna-girl marches to the beat of her own drummer. Smart and artistic, her major vulnerability is in matters of the heart. Ellie’s determination to find the truth in all things can be disconcerting – she hates people who lie or hide the truth behind pretty facades. She’s leaning towards a journalism career, starting as an intern on Caitlin Ryan’s show. But Ellie’s put-together façade hides what happens at home – and sometimes her hunger for control finds an unhealthy outlet that cuts too deep.

Emma Nelson – Grade 9
An independent thinker and crusader for the environment, Emma has a clear sense of what’s right. She has the courage and conviction to fight for what she believes in – even if she sometimes sees things in black and white. But Em is always learning, and now she’s working hard at developing an awareness of when she’s getting too serious. This year, Emma has to struggle with adapting to a new baby in the house, which leads to a yearning to find her own birth father. There are also troubles afoot in her relationship with her best friend.

Manuella "Manny" Santos – Grade 9
Manny’s been Emma’s best friend for, like, forever – and she’s a bit tired of living in Emma’s shadow. Bubbly, vivacious, a huge flirt and maybe just a bit of a ditz, Grade Nine finds Manny ready to supercharge her image and grab hold of popularity at any cost. And there will be costs – the disapproval of her Philippino-Catholic parents, the implosion of her friendship with Emma and something even tougher.

Chris Sharpe – Grade 9
A new Grade Nine at school, Chris is a studied version of urban cool. He hopes to make it big as a hip-hop artist one day. In the meantime, he’s definitely enjoying life at Degrassi, especially as he and Emma get to know each other.

Liberty Van Zandt – Grade 9
Described by her classmates as weirdly original, Liberty is a force to be reckoned with at school. She’s driven to be the best and won’t accept less than perfection. She’s the editor of the school newspaper, she’s on every committee possible and she’s a hopeful Student Council re-elect. Although she rarely seems to care what her classmates think, underneath Liberty is a truly vulnerable girl.

J.T. Yorke – Grade 9
The class clown and confidence man, JT refuses to apply himself at school – mainly because he’s convinced of his destiny to become a showbiz millionaire. He’s the kind of guy who is always testing the limits, running scams and bailing himself out of one disaster-of-his-own-making after another. What he will learn is that the stakes are higher now that he’s hanging with the older “in crowd”.

Degrassi Alumnai, Teachers & Parents

Coach Arnie Armstrong
Coach Armstrong brings a sense of fair play to all his dealings at Degrassi. In the classroom, he teaches Math and Health as well as Phys. Ed. He cares about his students and is enthusiastic about extra-curricular activities, giving his time to help run things. Coach may be a little quiet, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t carry authority among students and athletes alike.

Ms. Daphne Hatzilakos
The school’s Science teacher is a big distraction – she’s the kind of blonde, busty and attractive older woman that boys dream of. Ms. Hatzilakos doesn’t see this as a problem, however, but as an opportunity to teach her students not only about the tenets of chemistry, but about treating women with respect.

Joey Jeremiah
It’s not really a surprise that the greatest confidence man in Degrassi’s history grew up to become a used-car salesman. But Joey’s more serious side is evident in his commitment to being the best single parent possible – to his six year-old daughter Angela first and now as guardian to Craig – her half-brother. Joey thinks he’s adjusted to the challenges of having a teen boy in the house, but Craig will be throwing a lot of surprises at him this year. Personally, the roughest years since his wife died are over and it’s time for Joey to start thinking of himself again. Half-hearted attempts at dating last year were disastrous, but Joey’s starting to feel like he’s ready for a real relationship.

Kate Kerwin
Kate is a real-estate agent who has pretty much had sole custody of her daughter, Ashley, since her husband left a number of years ago. Kate‘s an idealist and a bit of a perfectionist, which has helped her to raise a very accomplished and poised daughter. Now if she could only work her magic on her stepson Toby.

Ms. Laura Kwan
Degrassi’s English teacher can appear hard and unforgiving on the surface, but it’s only because she’s dedicated to making her students do their best. When she feels stressed, she can be snappish and demanding. Her no-nonsense manner works well for most of the students – even if she is making Spinner repeat Grade Nine English.

Christine "Spike" Nelson
Spike is Emma’s proud and outspoken mother and the proprietor of her own hair salon. Having done it alone all these years, with Snake in her life, she may finally get a bit of a break. Too bad that’s not on the horizon. With a new baby in the house, a new phase in Emma’s growing pains and Snake’s illness hampering his co-parenting skills, it’s going to be a bit longer before Spike gets a break.

Mr. Dan Raditch
Degrassi’s principal is a committed, no-nonsense administrator. He has embraced media and technology—even if he doesn’t understand them. He tries and his heart is certainly in the right place. He will have new challenges at school this year – not the least of which is facing off against student rebellion in response to his tough new Code of Conduct.

Caitlin Ryan
Joey’s high-school flame has relocated to Toronto with her acclaimed TV show, Caitlin Ryan: Unscripted. A passionate and devoted environmental activist, she easily earns the admiration of Emma and her classmates. Since dumping her fiancé last year, Caitlin’s given up on relationships. Still, Caitlin’s glad to be back among friends and is more than willing to make the time to be there for them, including – and maybe especially – Joey.

Shelia
Abrasive, brash and mouthy, Sheila has her own variety of tart-tongued charm. With a Maritimer’s brassy sense of humour, she keeps the cafeteria running smoothly—if not always appetizingly.

Archie "Snake" Simpson
Content in his life as a media immersion teacher at Degrassi, Snake has a goofy sense of humour that makes him a favourite with the kids. He’s a committed teacher – and even more committed to his new role as Dad. But there are more hurdles for him to leap – hurdles made harder when Snake is faced with a health scare of his own – one that will affect his students and his family.

Just Wait Until You See The Real Thing

The N has started a new advertising campaign for 2004 and Degrassi is heavily featured in it. Here are transcripts...I gave them each a little title to make it easier to seperate commercials.

01. Ellie and Sean

ELLIE: No one gets me.
SEAN: Yeah.
ELLIE: I'm just looking for someone with a little bit of an edge.
SEAN: Yeah.
ELLIE: Who's not afraid to be bad.
SEAN: Yeah.
ELLIE: Yeah.

MONTAGE:

- Sean and Ellie eye each other.
- Sean and Ellie sit together and laugh.
- Ellie looks over and smiles.
- Sean and Ellie lace their fingers together. Ellie beams.

SEAN: Yeah.
ELLIE: [sigh]

02. Improbable Couples

MR. RADITCH: Attention Degrassi students. It has come to my attention that we do not have enough improbable or exciting new couples. Please pair off.
GROUP: What?!
[Various exclamations of dislike.]
TOBY: Score! heh.

MONTAGE:

- Manny walking by JT.
- Emma and Chris walking together.
- Marco gazing up at Dylan.
- Jimmy kissing Hazel.
- Rick and Terri standing close together.
- Sean looking at Ellie as they lie on the ground together.
- Hazel sitting on Toby's lap and moving in to kiss him.

MANNY: No. Way.

03. Revenge

CRAIG: ...What?

04. Jealous

PAIGE: Ter, why are you back with Rick? He's psycho.
TERRI: You're jealous.

05. Hospital

NURSE: Doctor Forest (?), dial 118, please. Doctor Forest, please dial 1-1-8.

[Paige and Spinner look through a window into a hospital room. Terri is lying on the hospital bed, connected to machines. Spinner looks upset and/or angry. Paige gets upset and walks off.]

06. Out Of Here

SEAN: Hey, guys, I might be out of here. For good.
MANNY: [gasp]
ELLIE: No way.
JIMMY: What? Are you serious?
EMMA: Yeah, whatever. See ya.

3.13 This Charming Man

Things are back on track for Emma now that she’s officially over Sean. Newly single Chris has even asked her out! But when she hears rumours that Sean’s part of a gang stealing things from Degrassi (including Mr. Simpson’s laptop), Emma becomes obsessed with bringing Sean to justice. But is she really interested in making the school a safer place, or does she just want Sean to pay for breaking her heart?

Paige, Spinner and Jimmy are inching closer to freedom when they all begin Driver’s Ed. Paige is a natural, logging tons of road practice, thanks to her brother, while Spinner’s a nervous wreck about getting behind the wheel. But the pair take a wrong turn when Paige loses her concentration when driving with their seriously hot instructor, Mr. Falcone.

3.14 Accidents Will Happen
Canada: January 26th (pt. 1) and February 2nd (pt. 2)

Part 1:

There’s a big gymnastics meet at Degrassi, and Manny’s going to lead the team to gold! But when she starts to feel sick, she fears that her queasy stomach might be more than the flu or even a case of bad nerves. And she’s suddenly not sure she and Craig used protection when they had sex. Not knowing where to turn (it’s sure not going to be her strict mom), Manny turns to Emma’s mom Spike, the one person she knows who’s been in her shoes. When Manny’s worst fears are realized, she finds support from Spike, Emma and even Craig, who takes the news surprisingly well.

Toby’s feeling more and more shut out of JT’s new world of hanging with the cool kids, especially when Jimmy invites JT to DJ Mad Bullets concert. So Toby comes up with a plan to win Jimmy over: he’ll hack into the school’s computer system and alter Jimmy’s math grade. After all, if there’s one thing a nerd like Toby knows, it’s computers! So what can go wrong?

Part 2:

Manny’s tempted by the romantic family scenario Craig paints and begins to think she and Craig really could keep this baby. Even Ashley shares the news with the entire cafeteria. But after she and Craig fail miserably at taking care of Baby Jack, Manny has to confront the reality of being a mother at her age. She can’t do this! But can she carry the baby full-term and give it up for adoption? Or should she deal with this now, and have an abortion?

JT’s finally had enough of Liberty’s go-nowhere crush and tells her to move on. So when she’s paired with Sean on a history project, she’s decides that Sean’s the latest target of her affections. Impressing Sean takes a lot more effort and ingenuity than she anticipated, but in the process, she discovers someone else has a crush of their own—on her!

Degrassi: The Next Generation moves to a new day, Mondays at 8:30 p.m. ET beginning Jan. 26 on CTV (check local listings). The move pairs Degrassi with this season’s hit The OC, which follows at 9 p.m. ET.

The Jan. 26 episode marks the first of a two-part special episode entitled Accidents Will Happen, as Manny (Cassie Steele) is forced to make one of the biggest decisions of her life.

In part one, Manny is determined to lead her gymnastics team to gold, but finds herself dealing more with her queasy stomach than her competitive flare. When her nausea continues, she fears that she may be living out every teenage girl’s worst nightmare. One night of unprotected sex with Craig (Jake Epstein) may be turning into a situation with life-long consequences. A conflicted Manny deals with her emotions by turning to Emma’s mother, Spike (Amanda Stepto), the one person she knows who has faced a similar situation. With Emma (Miriam McDonald) and Spike’s support, Manny musters up enough courage to tell Craig, who receives the news surprisingly well.

In part two (Mon., Feb. 2), Manny and Craig work together to try to figure out the best solution to their situation. The two discuss and consider the possibility of creating an idealistic family situation -- a mother, a father and a baby living happily ever after. However, after their disastrous attempt at caring for Spike’s baby Jack for one evening, reality sets in and Manny realizes that being a mother at such a young age may not be for her. She is overwhelmed with questions - should she keep this baby? Does she want to?

3.16 Take On Me

Five kids from different worlds are stuck in a room - on a Saturday! When Raditch introduces Saturday detention, Sean, Ellie, Hazel, Jimmy and Toby are the first inductees. Despite being in different cliques, the students come to realize that they’re all in the same boat together. With a school all to themselves, they have a lot more fun than they anticipated. But will these new-found friendships survive Monday morning?

3.17 Don't Dream It's Over

- Sean visits Caitlin at the CQJH offices.

3.18 Rock and Roll High

- Craig apologizes to Ashley...but for the wrong thing.
- There's a Battle Of the Bands contest in this episode.
- Chris Woodward of the Toronto Blue Jays guest stars as one of the celebrity judges for the contest.

3.19 It's Raining Men

- There's a commercial featuring a dog (a Jack Russell) wearing hiphop clothes that is supposed to be really funny.

3.20 I Want Candy

- There's a scene where Ellie is hanging out over at Sean's house.

3.22 The Power Of Love

- This season's finale features the school prom.
- There's at least one scene with just Paige, Spinner, Jimmy and Hazel.
- The crew placed a ceramic cat with a shocked expression on it's face in the background of every scene in this episode.
- The final scene features the entire student cast in some way.
Billy Ray Cyrus (of "Achy Breaky Heart" fame) will appear in this episode. His appearance is described as a 'featured guest performance'.
